How we test
Our consumer panel tried over 100 Easter products across the likes of lamb, hot cross buns and Easter eggs. We’ve collated all of the GHI-approved Morrisons products in one place, so you can add the lot to your basket for a faff-free day.
EASTER STARTER OR VEGGIE MAIN
Morrisons The Best Layered Vegetable Tart 2 x 250g
Score: 83/100
Whether you choose to serve as a starter or as part of the main feast alongside all the trimmings, this well-presented puff pastry scored highly in our Easter taste test. The crispy exterior gently encases soft butternut squash, wilted spinach and chestnuts. It was the sweet beetroot chutney that really caught our panel’s attention though, adding a well-seasoned dimension. Finished with nuts and pumpkin seeds, all that’s left is to plate it up.
BEST BUDGET RACK OF LAMB
Morrison’s Rack of Lamb 1kg
Score: 82/100
With such a delicious natural taste, our testers found this juicy rack needed very little seasoning. Small but meaty, you can expect a pleasant gamey tone with some saltiness coming from the fat. When following cooking instructions, our testers found these had a perfectly caramelised crust and tender pink middle. Not bad for £7.50 a rack!
BEST IN CATEGORY: HERBED BABY POTATOES
Morrisons Herby Baby Potatoes 360g
Score: 81/100
The combination of sultanas, currants and raisins in these bakes adds a pleasantly toffeed sweetness with a hint of sweet orange. Subtly spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, the bread has a chewy crust, which a couple of our taste testers likened to the texture of a bread roll. As such, we’d recommend using these halves to make a hot cross bun bacon buttie (yes, really!).
ALTERNATIVE EASTER SIDE
Morrisons Sweet Potato Mash 300g
Score: 73/100
Add some sunshine to your plate with Morrisons’ creamy sweet potato mash. Our testers thought this veg was well-seasoned, with a peppery warmth and a subtle caramelised sweetness. Most importantly, they all agreed it was super-smooth!
BEST FROZEN PEAS FOR BIG FAMILIES
Morrisons British Garden Peas 1.5kg
Score: 70/100
This bumper bag of chewy garden peas is ideal for large veg-loving families. Our testers found there was an obvious variance in size, especially when compared to our winning branded buy, however they had a well-balanced flavour with hints of butter and saltines.
HOT CROSS BUNS
Morrison’s The Best Extra Fruity Hot Cross Buns 4pk
Score: 81/100
The combination of sultanas, currants and raisins in these bakes adds a pleasantly toffeed sweetness with a hint of sweet orange. Subtly spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, the bread has a chewy crust, which a couple of our taste testers likened to the texture of a bread roll. As such, we’d recommend using these halves to make a hot cross bun bacon buttie (yes, really!).
GLUTEN FREE HOT CROSS BUNS
Morrisons Free From Hot Cross Buns
Score 70/100
These gluten free golden bakes are generously studded with fruit, and finished with a rustic looking cross. There’s a gentle sweetness to them from the raisins, although our panel would have preferred a little more festive spice.
EASTER EGG
Morrisons The Best Hand Decorated Belgian Chocolate Luxury Layered Egg 275g
Score: 80/100
Can’t choose between white, milk or dark chocolate this Easter? Morrisons has helpfully combined three hand-decorated eggs, nestled inside one another. Our testers thought the chocolatey layers complemented each other well, and looked very luxurious given the price.
PINOT NOIR
Morrisons The Best Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 75cl
Score: 75/100
Barrel-aged in French oak for 10 months, Morrisons has collaborated with highly regarded Chilean winemaker Errazuriz for this own-brand bottle. The fruit for this elegant wine comes from a single vineyard, which benefits from cool winds coming off the nearby Pacific Ocean. The result is an incredibly smooth, cherry-scented red with subtle spice.
